A woman walks along Brick Lane, a doormat under her arm. She looks in at doorways as she walks; sometimes she places her mat at the threshold, carefully wipes her feet on it, and enters the building. Sometimes she walks past. Passers-by and shopkeepers accept the mat quite passively; some even use it.
