Installation

Kate likes the “blurring of art and life”. Her installations can be quiet and may not be noticed. She likes involving other people to make her work. She has worked in the museum at Strawberry Hill House, with staff in the education & archive departments at the Whitechapel Gallery, with the ferryman at Ham, with a group of teenage girls, with the shopkeepers of Brick Lane. Kate’s work questions our insularity. She is interested in making connections or shedding light on lack of connections, and exploring relationships between institutions.

To the Palace

A site-specific painting, 'To the Palace', in the group show Out of Place.  The painting, installed in a blocked-up archway, draws our attention to the changes the building has undergone.  The archway was revealed by the architect during the renovation work.  The painting shows an imagined view through the arch to Richmond Palace beyond.

A Patch of Sky

“Always try to keep a patch of sky above your life…..You have a soul in you of rare quality, an artist’s nature; never let it starve for lack of what it needs.”  Marcel Proust. Catching taunting glimpses of reflected sky, while struggling to find time to work on her art, Kate Proudman began producing a series of small photographic pieces exploring and recording the obstacles, the different things that get in the way of her creativity and contribute to her struggle to reach her ‘patch of sky’.

Sign of the Times

Strange Covid Times, 2020  An onslaught of instructions everywhere.  A collection of new jargon, codes, commands, measurements & restrictions.

Lockdown Letters to Horace

An installation at Strawberry Hill House by Judith North, Kate Proudman and Charmaine Stimson, about the letters Strawberry Hill House received from local people, "Writing to Horace Walpole" about their lockdown experiences. The site-specific installation had several parts in various locations around the house; soundscapes, film and installation, which explored the contradictions of the letters: that the handwritten letters were received digitally due to lockdown; that Horace Walpole did not receive them nor reply;  and that the individual letters together created a strong collective experience.

Peace of Mind

An installation on the Thames at Twickenham, 2009: Finding it impossible to introduce the curators of Ham House and Marble Hill House, two stately homes, close neighbours opposite one another on the Thames at Twickenham, the artist responded by designing a flag for Peace of Mind, Hammerton’s Ferry.

Archive, an audio-walk

An Audio-walk for Central House, Whitechapel High Street, London E1, 2011. A display case at the entrance of the Cass exhibits old prospectuses & photographs and forms the point of departure for an audio-walk, during which a whispering voice guides the viewer through the building, opening up an alternative world of the semi-fictional past. In a silent computer suite, a picture is painted – in sound – of a bustling canteen. A deserted studio becomes a pre-computerised library is full of books, pot plants and chatty staff. The intimate guiding voice is interwoven with radio news, music, abstract sounds of life, as extracts from prospectuses are read, and anecdotes are told.

Keeping up with the Joneses

An installation in the Whitechapel Gallery, 2011: A painting hangs in the Whitechapel Art Gallery and is viewed through binoculars from the Cass School of Art on the opposite side of Whitechapel High Street. The painting shows a view from inside the ‘Creative Studio’ in the gallery. It shows the steel props that support the decorative stone gable on the façade of the Whitechapel Gallery.

Perfect Every Time

A performance at the General Election: Carrying banners with slogans from advertising strap-lines, teenagers protest outside an official Polling Station during voting in the general election. Each ‘activist’ has chosen and/or made their own slogan.

Welcome

A performance and film: A woman walks along Brick Lane, a doormat under her arm.  She looks in at doorways as she walks; sometimes she places her mat at the threshold, carefully wipes her feet on it, and enters the building.

Revolt

An installation at Marble Hill House: Escaping the restrained grid of the limestone floor, the created tessellations explore the house on their own, subversively pursuing new directions; disrupting the balance; creating energy.
