To the Palace

For the group show Out of Place, Kate made a site-specific painting, ‘To the Palace’. The painting, installed in an archway- now blocked up – draws the visitor’s attention to the changes the building has undergone over time.  The archway had originally been concealed and was revealed by the architect during the renovation work.  The painting shows an imagined view through the arch to Richmond Palace beyond.

To make the painting, Kate explored the composition of Matisse’s many doorway paintings, making small watercolour sketches, which she also showed in the exhibition.
