Bio

Kate Proudman works with installation, paintings, sound, photography & performance. She studied architecture at Bristol and Edinburgh Universities and graduated in Fine Art at London Met in 2011.  See list below of current & recent exhibitions.

She lives and works in London. Together with two friends from art school, she co-founded artist-led gallery One Paved Court in 2017 to bring to West London some of the less commercial art regularly enjoyed in East London.

Artist’s Statement

Kate likes to involve other people to make her work. She has worked with staff in the education & archive departments at Whitechapel GalleryWhitechapel Gallery, with the ferryman at Ham, a group of teenage girls, and the shopkeepers of Brick Lane.

Kate Proudman’s paintings often begin as a response to a written description of a place of personal significance given to the artist by a collaborator. Working with the text, she uses drawing & collage to make a painting which is her interpretation of the place. Then she uses models, projection & distortion to subvert & fracture the images she has created, to express the ambiguity of the writer’s position and the unrevealed qualities of the space. Exploring the process of deciphering the text, she plays with its readability by erasing, layering, and reassembling, to looks for the unknown beyond what is described.

She uses paint as a metaphor for her understanding of text, working back and forth until a new space is revealed. She explores how we receive information; how we piece together images from words, and evoke the passing of time as our memories mix and overlap.

Kate is interested in exploring relationships,  in creating links between institutions, between buildings, between people.
